Taking an international step in your career is exciting, especially when moving to a new country without a job. Ulf took the leap from Sweden to the Netherlands and found his place at Deconcern, where he contributes to a more sustainable world as a software developer. How did he experience this transition? And what makes his work so challenging and valuable? We spoke with him about his journey.
Ulf had al langer de wens om naar Nederland te verhuizen. Hoewel hij ook overwoog om verder naar het zuiden van Europa te trekken, koos hij bewust voor Nederland, mede omdat zijn partner in Duiven woont. Hij besloot de stap te zetten en zei zijn baan in Zweden op. Hij begon actief te solliciteren op IT-functies in de regio Nijmegen, Arnhem en Utrecht. Zijn zoektocht bleek uitdagender dan verwacht. Ondanks zijn expertise in softwareontwikkeling, ondervond hij dat veel bedrijven de voorkeur gaven aan Nederlandstalige kandidaten. Ook het ontbreken van een BSN-nummer, een cruciaal document voor werken en wonen in Nederland, bemoeilijkte het proces. Maar door breed te solliciteren en door te zetten, vond hij uiteindelijk een match met Deconcern via The Key to life. Zodoende had hij op het moment van zijn verhuizing al enkele maanden eerder getekend bij dit bedrijf!
Ulf had long desired to move to the Netherlands. Although he also considered moving further south in Europe, he consciously chose the Netherlands, partly because his partner lives in Duiven. He decided to take the step and quit his job in Sweden. He actively began applying for IT positions in the Nijmegen, Arnhem, and Utrecht regions. His search turned out to be more challenging than expected. Despite his expertise in software development, he found that many companies preferred Dutch-speaking candidates. The lack of a BSN number, a crucial document for working and living in the Netherlands, also complicated the process. However, by applying broadly and persevering, he eventually found a match with Deconcern through The Key to Life. As a result, by the time he moved, he had already signed with the company several months earlier!
“Ik had niet direct door dat ik via The Key solliciteerde,” lacht Ulf. “Maar het was een fijne verrassing.” Tijdens het sollicitatieproces merkte hij dat er een sterke focus lag op productontwikkeling en het grotere doel achter de organisatie. Dit sprak hem meteen aan!
Bij Deconcern werkt hij nu als Softwareontwikkelaar binnen een hecht team. De organisatie ontwikkelt een webplatform dat met behulp van machine learning gegevens uit veiligheidsinformatiebladen analyseert om te controleren of deze gevaarlijke stoffen negatieve effecten op het milieu hebben. “Ik vind het een mooie mix van techniek en impact. Het is geweldig om met software echt iets bij te dragen aan een betere wereld.”
“I didn’t immediately realize I was applying through The Key,” Ulf laughs. “But it was a pleasant surprise.” During the application process, he noticed a strong focus on product development and the organization's larger purpose. This immediately resonated with him.
At Deconcern, he now works as a software developer within a small, close-knit team. The company has developed a web platform that uses machine learning to analyze safety data sheets, ensuring companies comply with regulations by phasing out hazardous substances. “I love the combination of technology and impact. It’s amazing to contribute to a better world through software.”
Voorheen werkte Ulf bij grotere bedrijven met teams van tien tot driehonderd ontwikkelaars. De overstap naar een startup bracht nieuwe uitdagingen met zich mee, zoals meer verantwoordelijkheid en kortere ontwikkelcycli. “Het is een groot verschil,” vertelt hij. “We moeten hier met minder middelen slimme oplossingen bedenken en processen continu verbeteren.”
Sinds zijn start in april heeft Ulf veel zien veranderen.“We zijn nu veel beter in geautomatiseerd testen en werken met feature flagging, zodat we nieuwe functionaliteiten stapsgewijs en veilig kunnen implementeren.”
Previously, Ulf worked at larger companies with teams ranging from ten to three hundred developers. Transitioning to a startup brought new challenges, such as greater responsibility and shorter development cycles. “It’s a huge difference,” he says. “We have to come up with smart solutions and continuously improve processes with fewer resources.”
Since starting in April, Ulf has seen many improvements. “We’ve become much better at automated testing and using feature flagging to implement new functionalities step by step, making the process much safer.”

We worden enthousiast als er nieuws komt over strengere milieuregels, omdat we weten dat we daar met ons product een bijdrage aan kunnen leveren.” Ook de werksfeer binnen het team bevalt hem goed. “We werken heel nauw samen, delen ideeën en helpen elkaar met ‘rubber ducking’;problemen uitleggen aan een collega om tot nieuwe inzichten te komen.”

What Ulf appreciates most about Deconcern is the shared passion for sustainability. “Everyone here truly wants to make a positive impact. We get excited when stricter environmental regulations are announced because we know our product contributes to these changes.”
The team atmosphere also suits him well. “We work very closely together, share ideas, and help each other with ‘rubber ducking’—explaining problems to a colleague to gain new insights.”

Inmiddels woont en werkt Ulf al acht maanden in Nederland. De overgang van Zweden naar Nederland is hem goed bevallen. Hoewel hij de directe communicatiestijl van Nederlanders vooraf als mogelijk confronterend had ingeschat, ervaart hij dit juist als prettig en helder. De grootste aanpassing? “Kleine alledaagse dingen, zoals verschillende producten in de supermarkt,” lacht hij.
Wat de toekomst betreft, hoopt Ulf dat Deconcern blijft groeien en zijn impact verder vergroot. “Milieu-initiatieven kunnen soms naar de achtergrond verdwijnen bij crises, maar ik hoop dat we met ons werk bedrijven blijven helpen om schadelijke stoffen uit te faseren.”

Ulf has now been living and working in the Netherlands for eight months. The transition from Sweden to the Netherlands has gone smoothly. While he initially thought Dutch directness might be confronting, he actually finds it clear and refreshing. The biggest adjustment? “The small everyday things, like different products in the supermarket,” he laughs.
Looking ahead, Ulf hopes that Deconcern will continue to grow and expand its impact. “Environmental initiatives sometimes take a back seat during crises, but I hope our work will keep helping companies phase out harmful substances.”
